Other Duties As Assigned

Last month a friend asked me to help host her father’s birthday party to free up some time for her family to enjoy the festivities and forget about the responsibilities.  I am a natural host: I love greeting smiling faces eager to enjoy a carefree evening, pouring glasses of bubbly, and dashing to the kitchen to refill quickly disappearing dishes, so this was the perfect job for me.  It also helped that Teddy was asked to document the evening, so I would have an event partner-in-crime.

The family was expecting about 40 people, had prepared several entrees and desserts, and was anticipating a few additional dishes with the arrival of a few guests.  Bottles of wine were stocked and ready for serving in the cellar, plates and utensils were nicely laid on the table, hot dishes were coming out of the oven, and guests began to steadily stream through the door when I realized that my previous definition of “hosting” was a romanticized version and was leaving out several other duties.

Once the majority of guests had been received, drinks were poured, and food was eaten, it was time for a long bout in the kitchen with dishes.  I was wearing relatively comfortable shoes, but quickly aching feet from standing in one place had me longing for my leopard Steve Madden flats!  I was running up and down stairs to fetch new bottles of wine and dashing [as I had anticipated] to and from the kitchen to clear dinner and set out hot-from-the-oven desserts.

Although hosting is incredibly rewarding, this experience reminded me of all the work that is and could be involved.  With the holiday season and it’s many occasions around the corner, here are some tips for easing your stress and labor while assisting friends or hosting your own fête:

Wear comfortable shoes.  In addition to washing dishes, you most likely will be running back and forth from the kitchen with hot dishes or a fresh bottle of wine to serve!

Wear an apron.  Although your hand-me-down red plastic apron might not be the trendiest look during a party, it will save you the headache of getting stains out of your lovely holiday dress down the road.  There are also some super cute cloth aprons out there, like this macaron apron from Paper Source.

Know your schedule.  If you’ve been asked to help friends and/or family with their upcoming party, make sure you know the plan in advance!  How long will the party last?  How many guests will they have throughout the night?  Will there be entertainment?  Knowing these details will put you at ease and free you up for any other duties as assigned.

Have fun.  Hosting can be stressful, so throw on some cheerful music to keep yourself entertained in the kitchen, pour yourself a delicious beverage, and don’t hesitate to ask your guests for a helping hand!

Halloween Costumes on a Budget

Halloween-2Rogue
Halloween-3
It’s that time of year again: pumpkins wait eagerly on doorsteps, grocery stores fill their shelves to the brim with bags of candy and treats, and I raid my closet to put together a “homemade” costume.  I’ve never been one to spend a large amount of money on a pre-made store bought costume and tend to opt for a DIY option.  It’s less expensive and more fun to see what you can pull out of the arsenal and pair together to complete a themed look!

This year, Teddy and I decided to give X-Men’s Wolverine and Rogue a try.  T has been genetically blessed with plentiful facial hair, which we knew would be a slam-dunk for Wolverine’s distinctive beard, and we owned mostly every other piece needed for both costumes.  If you are struggling to come up with a look this year, this is what you’ll need for Rogue and Wolverine:

Rogue:
Black leggings or pants (leather is a plus!)
Black top
Black knee-high boots
Leather jacket
Grey or silver hair spray

Out of all of these supplies, the only item I bought was a $5.00 can of silver hair spray from the Halloween section of CVS.  I luckily own a lot of black and even had a hand-me-down one piece black cotton/spandex suit.  If you don’t own a leather jacket, you can always borrow one from a friend!

Wolverine:
Trimmed facial hair
White or black tank (white preferred)
Jeans with a thick brown belt
Dog tags (a chain necklace does the trick!)
Boots
Leather jacket

Fall To-Do List Update

I have had the craziest last couple of weeks.  Between work, friends, projects, quartet rehearsals, and family obligations, it’s hard to find a moment to slow down and reflect.  Saturday was the first day in a while that I was able to sit down and think about how I have been coming along on my fall to-do list, so cheers to the weekend!

Even though I have been incredibly busy, I have been happy.  I am the sort that gets a huge amount of gratification from accomplishing things, and that’s what fall has done for me.  Here’s what I have been up to lately:

1. Keeping up with appearances.  I am now into my second month of Birchbox, and loving it!  Since I’m not adventurous enough to buy a full-sized bottle of product to try, it’s nice to get a few samples to see what works.  I’m currently loving the Dr. Jart+ tinted moisturizer from the September box and still getting a feel for a few items in the October box.

2. Exercising.  I joined a running club in Shirlington and it has done wonders for my energy level.  It’s also a great way to release stress after a long day at work, and to socialize!  It’s hard for me to motivate myself to work out, but so much easier with a great group of friends.  My goal is to be able to run the entire 5K loop without stopping to walk, but I must say I am quite proud that I have even completed between 3.1 – 3.7 miles AND I am no longer a running hater!

3. Getty crafty.  After a realization that I need to channel my younger more crafty self, I decided to host a monthly craft night.  There’s nothing too much more relaxing and comforting than creating art, drinking, and laughing with friends.  Our first craft night featured one of my childhood favorite crafts: Sculpey.  In addition to some creative planters, we decided to make a few octopi friends for our rooms and offices.  DIY steps and photos to come!

4. Practicing. Strike Quartet is keeping me busy with rehearsals and preparing for our first performance on October 18th at the Fridge.  It has been awesome getting the group together to do something that we all love.  Our show at the Fridge was a great first gig (check out our mention in the Capitol Hill Corner blog!) and I’m looking forward to performing more and more.  And look at this awesome poster that my friend Dan made for us!

Koda Bear

There really is something wonderful about a furry friend greeting you at the door upon your arrival, nuzzling your knee in admiration, and plopping their head down on your lap, content with your mere presence.  Dogs, in particular, provide a incomparable comfort as loyal and loving companions.

I have had several dogs in my lifetime, but Peanut was my favorite little buddy.  It was love at first sight, so he came home with me from a farm in 4th grade and quickly became part of the family.  My friend Chelsea has a similar bond with her pit bull mix, Koda Bear.  It’s kind of hard not to love this sweet [mischievous] face!

I can’t wait for the day that T and I can get a dog.  Right now our schedules are just too crazy to even think about getting a dog [and it doesn’t help that our apartment building doesn’t allow pets of any kind], so I just have to live vicariously through my friends, and I’m OK with that… for now.

Apple Picking

If you remember from a couple weeks ago, getting outside more was a must on my fall to-do list.  Aside from my weekly runs in Shirlington, I had been having trouble checking this off my list, until two weekends ago… my friend Lizzy and I thankfully [in advance] penciled in a fun trip to go apple picking and, by golly, we made it happen!

We decided to visit Stribling Orchard in Markham, Virginia, just an hour south from D.C.  Lizzy grew up picking apples at this particular orchard and hadn’t been back in years.  We arrived an hour and a half before closing, which ended up being a blessing in disguise.  The bustling orchard was beginning to quiet as young and old apple pickers alike rang up their spoils of the afternoon, and we almost had the place to ourselves.  It was a gorgeous evening as we scoured the orchard for each different type of apple.  We collected McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, and Lizzy’s all-time favorite, Stayman apples.

I have also been trying to find any reason to wear my navy blue floppy hat from Anthropologie that has been sitting on top of my wardrobe all year long.  I feel like the perfect time of year [now] to wear a hat like this goes by in a flash and I usually forget to pull it down!  Keeping with my button down + cardi go-to outfit, I wore a new darling polka dot and heart shirt that I got from Madewell a couple weeks ago [on sale!].

Reflections on a Sunday

As I sit here listening to the folksy guitar riffs and syrupy lyrics of the Bellevue Rhythmaires while working a rental event, I realized with all of the organization going on in my life I should also organize my blog!  You may have noticed the new categories on the menu header that I hope will help you to navigate easily for more specific content.

Although I had to work today, the event we hosted was beautiful and fun, and the gorgeous weather didn’t hurt either.  I hope everyone had a chance to get outside and enjoy it!

Event Trends for Fall 2013

Last week my colleague and I attended RSVP Catering’s Fall and Holiday Open House Tasting at the Anderson House, D.C.  The “house” is more of a mansion with it’s grand staircases, marble structures, and statues fit for a museum and, in addition to the delicious food and “Lavender Louvre” cocktail, the decor was beautiful inside the house, and out.  Navy and aqua blues filled the backyard garden and complemented a serene reflecting pool.

And blue is just the beginning!  Here are some other popular event themes that have been trending lately:

Pink and Gold

Hints of gold have been popping up everywhere on Pinterest and in several blog posts from The Wedding Chicks and Style Me Pretty.  I’m loving this feminine look that can be used for showers, weddings, or even a backyard party!

Creative Cake Toppers

I tried my hand this summer at making a cake topper for my birthday cake.  It didn’t come out perfectly, but it was an easy and cute way to jazz up a dessert.  Check out these beautiful and intricate toppers featured on The Wedding Chicks.

Polka Dots

A classic fashion style turned event decor staple.  How is is that dots and confetti make things seem that much more fun?!  Creating Couture Parties has a great blog post on polka dot party inspiration.

Fall To-Do List

Summer is the busiest season at work: fantastic performances and events that come with endless days running around and that leave you less than the desired time to spend on those extra things that make you happy.

So many activities on my “summer to-do list” were neglected, like pesky dust bunnies forgotten in the corner.  I never went to Jazz in the Garden, or took a walk along the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and goodness knows my body hasn’t seen the gym in far too long.

The craziness of summer is finally coming to a close and I am starting to be able to look at life with fresh eyes.  With fall comes endless possibilities – it’s  like preparing for all of your resolutions in the New Year, except with much better weather.

My list involves getting outdoors and active more, making time for friends, allowing time for creative outlets, and having some much needed “me” time:

1. Join a running club.  A friend has invited me to join her on Tuesdays for a little running [which I hate] after work.  Well, hate is a strong word, but I highly dislike running.  I’m hoping that this group activity will add some *positive* reinforcement to a dreaded form of exercise.  I think dinner and drinks afterwards won’t hurt either…

2. Sign up for Birchbox. Somehow, I have survived the last 10 years with the bare minimum of makeup and beauty products.  You could call me a “natural” gal, so give me a Physician’s Formula concealer and Neutrogena compact powder foundation from CVS and I’m good to go.  Although I could go on this way, I feel I at least owe it to myself to explore the world of beauty, and what better way is there for $10 to receive a box each month on your doorstep, teeming with new and exciting supplies?!

3. Play my little heart out. Playing the violin used to be my life.  Chamber group and symphony rehearsals, lessons, and hours of practice would make up my day in college.  Although exhausting, this much playing gave me a kind of satisfaction that I can’t get anywhere else.  I am excited to say that our quartet is back together, ready for weekly rehearsals and gigs around the DMV!  I will keep everyone updated with dates and locations.

4. Plan my fall/winter show lineup.  Fall and winter are for SHOWS!  Coming up this week on Friday is the Dirty Names, playing at Rock and Roll Hotel on H Street.  They are originally from Annapolis, so seeing them play will be especially fun! Also, if you haven’t heard of Charli XCX, check her out!  You most likely have heard her collaboration on the popular Icona Pop single, “I Love It,” but she has many more fantastic songs on her album True Romance that I can’t wait to hear live on November 16th at U Street Music Hall.

5. Just say “yes.” It’s so easy to fall into a “I can’t,” “I don’t have time,” “I’m too tired” rut.  This season is for yes’s.  It’s time to plan ahead, get active, and stay positive!

Birthday [stay-cation] Lunch

Since vacationing was not in my cards this summer, I decided to take full advantage of a Wednesday birthday and took off of work Wednesday – Friday for a mini “stay-cation.”  I turned 25 [woo hoo!] on August 7 and on the 8th, I was treated to a lovely sushi lunch in Old Town, Alexandria.  My mom got off work early and my sister took a quick lunch break from her Old Town office job, so we were able to spend the afternoon together.  Isn’t my mom so cute in her green Stella & Dot earings?!

After lunch, Teddy and I walked down by the Potomac River and were able to enjoy a little weekday time that we normally don’t get to spend together.  I wore a new cotton dress from ModCloth [that I am absolutely obsessed with] and fell in love all over again with all of the colored brick in this cute town.

A New Chapter

I am happy and excited to share that I am shifting my career focus to rental events as Corporate Rentals Coordinator!  Building and maintaining relationships will be a key aspect of the job [in addition to planning fun and fresh events!], as I meet clients and vendors and introduce them to our amazing organization and what it has to offer.  It’s a bittersweet transition, [as the “sun sets” on my previous position as Program Coordinator, Special Events] but I look forward to exciting things to come.

Stay tuned for brainstorms, photos, tips, and more, as I continue to learn about the event and rental industry, meet new people, and grow both personally and professionally.  As always, I would love to hear from you along the way, too!
